The position of Registrar of Vital Statistics and Deputy Registrar of Vital Statistics must possess their Certified Municipal Registrar (CMR) designation, which is obtained by taking a three day course through The State of New Jersey, Department of Health and Human Services – Office of the State Registrar and passing an examination given by the same.
Vital statistics deal with major life events including:
- Birth
- Marriage
- Death
- Civil Union
- Domestic Partnership

A Non- Genealogical Record is:
Births occuring within the last 80 years, marriages occurring within the last 50 years, deaths occurring within the last 40 years and all civil union and domestic
